Nursery Preparation!

We have finally started with the nursery. We were awaiting confirmation of our little angels’ gender before we started planning the colour schema of the nursery. We always knew we wanted soft colours that would fit not only a nursery but a pre-teenagers room as well. So no bold pink!

We were certain that we wanted a light grey as in our opinion grey gives a wonderful contrast to any other colour you might use in future and should you have a second child it is easy to convert a grey room for either a boy or girl. With this in mind we set of for the nearest hardware store, confident that it will be an easy choice between maybe one or two shades of grey, how wrong we were.

I have never seen so many shades of grey in my life. Each paint manufacturer, e.g Dulux, Plascon, etc. has their one type of grey, then for each of these types there are various shades, e.g. tender province, rising sunset, etc. for each of the shade variations there are different paint classes, e.g. enamel, pva, acrylic pva, etc. For a first time paint buyer this might all seem very daunting so I have a few suggestions here.

  • Do research online about the types of paint available, you are reading this blog so I presume you have internet access. My suggestion would be to go for a water based enamel as it is low in odour and VOC.

  • Have a clear idea of the colour schema you want to use. Even if you are not sure about the exact tint you would prefer, having a clear direction on the base colours will considerably shorten your time in the paint isles.

  • Ensure you have measured the surface area that needs to be covered as one can easily buy to much/little paint. Especially if you want to go for a tint mixed at the store you will struggle to find the same colour if you do not buy enough the first time round.

  • The devil is in the details; make sure you have all the necessary accessories, especially if you are painting yourself like I did. Make a check list of what you need. There is an endless plethora of painting checklists available on the internet, but I believe the following to be the essentials:

  • Brush and/or roller

  • Paint tray

  • Step ladder

  • Ground covering sheet

  • Crack filler with ladle

  • Sanding paper

  • Cloth

If you require a complete guide as to what to do and how please do not hesitate to contact me, I was raised by an artisan painter after all.

Back to the painting and our colour choice. We settled for a grey with a purple tinge, known as Tender Province. It has a lavender undertone which sows up quite nicely when well lit. I have attached some pictures of the finalised wall. We are still working on how we want the furniture to go into the room and I will add more pictures as soon as we make substantial progress in this regard.

I highly recommend doing the painting yourself. It gave me a sense of accomplishment to see the room finished and as fathers sometime feel left out of the pregnancy it is an excellent way of being part of the experience. It shows your partner a willingness to be part of her journey into motherhood as well. Then there is of course the bragging rights achieved as you can be sure I will be boasting to our daughter about how daddy painted her room.
